Sometimes the mattress problem isn’t even yours.

You wake up one morning and there’s a bloody mattress leaning against your fence.

Or sitting on the berm.

Or dumped beside your driveway like someone just decided your house was the local tip.

Now you’re the one stuck dealing with it.

It’s not your mattress.

You didn’t buy it.

You didn’t sleep on it.

But somehow you’re the one who has to pay to get rid of the bloody thing.

Not exactly fair, I know. But people are nuts. Some people will dump their rubbish anywhere just so they don’t have to deal with it themselves.

I remember walking down a back road in Hornby one Monday morning after the weekend. If you live locally you probably know the one — that road always ends up with rubbish dumped along it.

Mattresses. Old couches. Broken furniture. Bags of rubbish.

All sorts of crap turns up there every weekend.

I stopped to take a couple of photos of the latest pile that had appeared, thinking I might flick them through to the council just so they knew what was going on.

While I was standing there taking photos, this guy pulls up beside me and asks what I’m doing.

I told him I was thinking about sending the photos to the council to see if they’d remove it.

He laughs and goes, “Yeah right.”

So I said to him, “It’s bloody disgusting how people just dump their rubbish everywhere.”

And you know what he says to me?

“Yeah mate, I agree. Looks disgusting.”

Then he goes…

“I just take my rubbish down to the riverbed and dump it there. Nobody can see it.”

Holy hell.

He was serious.

That’s the sort of thinking you’re dealing with.

So when a mattress suddenly appears outside your house, there’s a good chance someone didn’t want to pay to get rid of it… so they’ve just left it for someone else to deal with.

Unfortunately, that someone is usually you.

Why Mattresses Are One of the Worst Things to Get Rid Of

Mattresses are a bloody nightmare to deal with.

They’re big.

They’re awkward.

And they don’t fit in a normal rubbish bin.

Even the big Christchurch council wheelie bins aren’t going to swallow a mattress. You can’t fold it up, you can’t squash it down, and you definitely can’t hide it inside a couple of rubbish bags.

So once a mattress turns up outside your place, it tends to just sit there.

Leaning against the fence.

Blocking the garage.

Or lying on the berm slowly soaking up rain.

And the longer it sits there, the worse it looks.

People drive past and think it’s yours.

Neighbours start wondering what the hell you’re doing with a mattress outside the house.

And if you leave it there too long, sometimes other people start adding their rubbish to the pile as well.

We’ve seen that happen heaps of times around Christchurch.

One mattress appears… then suddenly there’s a broken chair next to it.

Then a couple of rubbish bags.

Before you know it, it starts looking like a mini dump outside your own house.

The Dump Run Sounds Easy… Until You Actually Try It

A lot of people think they’ll just deal with it themselves.

“Sweet as, I’ll just take it to the dump.”

But once you actually look at the mattress sitting there, you realise it’s not that simple.

First problem — getting it into the car.

Mattresses don’t fit in most cars unless you’ve got a trailer or a ute. So people start trying to tie them onto the roof, or half shove them in the boot with the back door hanging open.

We’ve all seen that driving around Christchurch.

Mattress flapping in the wind on the motorway like a giant sail.

Then you’ve got the dump trip itself.

Load it up.

Drive across town.

Line up at the transfer station.

Pay the dumping fee.

Unload the thing.

Then drive home again.

By the time you’ve mucked around doing all that, most people realise the whole job has turned into half a day of hassle just to get rid of one mattress.

And If It’s Someone Else’s Mattress… That’s Even Worse

If you end up with someone else’s mattress dumped outside your place, you can only imagine what’s been going on on that thing before it got left there.

Most of them are pretty bloody rough.

Stained.

Smelly.

Sometimes damp from sitting outside.

And quite often covered in some sort of mystery substance that you really don’t want to look at too closely.

Let’s not even go there.

This is exactly why most people don’t want to drag a dumped mattress through their house or start wrestling with it trying to get it into the car.

Half the time you don’t even want to touch the thing.

And there’s another problem people forget about as well.

Bed bugs.

Those nasty little things love mattresses.

If a mattress has come out of a flat, rental, or someone’s bedroom and ends up dumped on the street, there’s always a chance it could be carrying them.

If you’re dealing with that situation, it’s better to handle it properly.

And That’s Where People Get Annoyed

And I don’t blame them.

It sucks having to pay to get rid of somebody else’s rubbish.

But what’s the alternative?

Leave the mattress sitting there for weeks?

Hope the council magically turns up and takes it away?

Most of the time that doesn’t happen.

So the mattress just sits there.

Getting wetter.

Getting dirtier.

Starting to look worse every day.

And the longer it sits there, the more it starts looking like your mess, even though it wasn’t your mattress in the first place.

So most people just decide to deal with it and get the bloody thing gone.
