This Happens More Than You Think

We’ve done jobs from all over the world.

Australia… Netherlands… Switzerland… all over the place.

A lot of people move away, but Mum or Dad are still here in Christchurch. Then something happens, and now you’ve got a house full of stuff to deal with — and you’re not even in the country.

COVID made it worse.

People couldn’t get back.

House is sitting there… full… and someone has to deal with it.

That’s usually when we get involved.

Most of the time, people aren’t trying to sort through everything.

They just want it gone.

Most Jobs End Up Being Full Clear-Outs

We don’t go through personal stuff.

That’s not our job.

Sometimes there’s a family member here who grabs a few important things.

But most of the time?

👉 it’s just “clear the whole place out”

And yeah… I’ve thought this a few times doing these jobs…

You load a few bins… Then a few more…

And you realise:

👉 someone’s whole life is sitting in those bins

60… 70… 90 years…

Gone in a few loads.

Bit rough, but that’s the reality.

Doing It From Overseas Is a Different Game

You’re not just dealing with the house.

You’re dealing with it blind.

You can’t walk through it.

You can’t open drawers.

You can’t check things properly.

You’re relying on photos, messages, and other people.

Sometimes People Get Someone Else to Go Through It First

We used to work with a couple of ladies — that was their whole job.

They’d go through the house properly and pull out anything worth keeping:

● photos

● certificates

● jewellery

● paperwork

Once they were done, we’d come in and clear everything else.

If you’re not able to get here yourself, that setup works well.

Someone checks it properly first…

Then everything else gets removed.

Some Jobs Are Full Strip-Outs

Especially during COVID, we had jobs where people just said:

👉 “take everything”

And they meant everything.

We’ve stripped houses right out:

● furniture

● rubbish

● carpet

● curtains

● stuff off the walls

These were usually people living on their own… But not coping.

Some of those places… There’s nothing to sort.

You walk in and it’s:

● old food everywhere

● animal mess through the house

● rats running around

● carpet absolutely ruined

You’re not deciding what to keep.

👉 it all goes

One Thing People Don’t Think About — Security

This catches people out.

Especially when you’re overseas.

I had a job where the house had been sorted properly.

Everything important was put into one room at the back.

Took about five or six days to go through it all.

People noticed.

Cars coming and going.

Activity.

We turned up to clear the rest… Back door kicked in.

All the junk was still there.

But the back room?

👉 completely cleaned out

Whoever did it waited.

They knew exactly what they were doing.

That’s someone’s memories — gone.

How You Can Make It Less Obvious

If you’re overseas, you need to think about how the place looks.

Because once it looks empty…

👉 it becomes a target

Keep It Looking Lived In

Get someone to mow the lawns.

Tidy gardens make a massive difference.

If it looks overgrown, it screams:

👉 no one’s here

Even every couple of weeks helps.

Doesn’t need to be perfect.

Just needs to look like someone still cares.

Small Things We Do On Site

When we’re there:

● open curtains in the morning

● shut them at night

● sometimes leave a light on

Nothing fancy.

Just enough so it doesn’t look abandoned.

Don’t Forget the Mailbox

This one’s huge.

Mailbox full?

👉 you might as well put a sign up

Get someone to clear it.

Neighbour, friend, anyone.

This Stuff Matters

People focus on clearing the house…

But forget what it looks like while it’s happening.

That’s when problems start.

Keep it simple:

● keep it tidy

● keep it looking active

● don’t make it obvious

When You Just Want It Done

By this point, most people are over it.

They’ve dealt with enough already.

Sometimes it’s not about doing it perfectly.

It’s about:

👉 getting it sorted

👉 getting it cleared

👉 moving on

👉 If you’re not sure what can actually be taken when clearing a place like this, check items we can pick up in Christchurch
