Currently, Christchurch has no dedicated mattress recycling facilities — and here’s why: Disassembling a mattress into separate materials (foam, fabric, metal) is a slow, hands-on process. In parts of New Zealand where recycling is available, it can cost 2–3 times more than landfill. That’s because every mattress must be pulled apart by hand, cleaned, and sorted — and there’s currently no cost-effective system for that in Christchurch.
As for donations, most charities won’t accept second-hand mattresses, even if they appear clean and in good condition.
